East Lothian Co-op

East Lothian Co-op Fruit & Veg van.

Given the wheelbase and rear overhang this van looks like
it's been built on a bus chassis.
Leyland possibly....but given brand loyalty
at the time perhaps an Albion is more likely.

It's a real heavy piece of machinery whose load
nowadays could probably be accommodated
in a "Transit" style van.

"From our own Market Gardens".........
at one time the Co-op was the biggest
farm owner in the UK.

Tranent & Haddington Co-op Bakery Van

This is definitely an Albion although
of unknown vintage. (To me at least)
Again, it's amazing how heavy & "solid"
these vehicles look when compared
to today's equivalent.

Possibly the young lad was the drivers "gopher"!

Both of the vehicles shown would visit outlying
villages & farms several times a week.

Tokens would be bought from the milkman or in the
Co-op grocery store and then left out overnight
for the delivery man to exchange for the
requested amount of milk.

Obviously this was safer than leaving cash out on the doorstep &
fluctuations in the price of milk would have no effect on
the value of the tokens.

Are they still available?
