Upon his return from the 1982 Commonwealth Games (Brisbane, Australia) the Community Council arranged for
gold medallist Willie Wood to be driven from Edinburgh to Gifford in a white Rolls Royce.

The church bell was rung as he approached the village and, at that signal, the children were let out of school
to watch him walk in procession, preceded by piper Graham Nairn, from Yester Kirk to the Bowling Club
where further celebrations took place.

In this photograph we see Willie proudly displaying his gold medal flanked by piper Graham
and, partly obscured, a flag bearing Neil McKinnon.
