High Street  1880's

The Village Hall, Tweeddale Arms Hotel and part of the High Street, looking North, in 1887.

Unfortunately this image has suffered water damage but is one of the oldest known photographs of Gifford.
For the other......see below.
Do you have anything older? Let us know.

Note the different steeple from that on the other photographs of the hall.
The new steeple and clock were added in 1887 in recognition of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

The photographer looks "the other way" along the High St.

This image of the High St., looking South, also dates from the 1880's.

Note the large two storey building at the end of the street which was known as "Robert Laurie's house".

This photograph has been "restored".
