Main Street, 1890s?

This photograph is a real "find" given the subject matter & its apparent age.

It shows the north side of Main Street and what nowadays is the Goblin Ha' Hotel.
It's a guess to say it's from the 1890/1900s.

There's a sign above the door on the left but unfortunately I can't
make out what it says, even with a magnifying glass.
This door would be rebuilt as a window, and the window to the right of the door
would later become the entrance to the Goblin Ha' Public Bar.

The advertising poster on the Cross might possibly have been for a local fair or sale.

Yester Church, seen behind the horse, doesn't look "right" somehow, but I can't figure out why.

The buildings look fairly neglected and, indeed, the whole photograph
portrays a rather "run down" feel to the street.

Any information about this scene would be very welcome.
