The ruins of Yester Castle and its underground chamber, The Goblin Ha',
lie in a densely wooded area about a mile south of Gifford.
It is not open to visitors.

                     Yester Castle

The Goblin Ha' is so called as it was reputedly
built by unworldly forces.
 It is immortalised in "The Host's Tale" from
Sir Walter Scott's "Marmion".

"Of lofty roof, and ample size,
Beneath the castle deep it lies;
To hew the living rock profound,
The floor to pave, the arch to round,
There never toiled a mortal arm,
It all was wrought by word and charm."

  Yester Castle was built between 1160 and 1250.
A Royal Charter of William the Lion, from 1160,
exists, granting the lands of Yester to
Sir Hugh (Hugo) Gifford.
