The Clock Tower

I recently had the opportunity to take some photographs inside the Village Hall clock tower.
The tower is reached by climbing up through the hatch in the ceiling of the vestibule, crawling through
a small opening in the wall separating the main structure from the tower, & then climbing a wooden
ladder which leads up to a narrow walkway adjacent to the clock mechanism.

The mechanism itself is surprisingly compact and, as can be seen, is maintained in excellent condition.

The tower was rebuilt and the present clock installed to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.
The brass plaque in the right hand photo above tells us that the clock was presented
to the Town
(sic) of Gifford by P.B. Swinton, Holyn Bank.

Peter Burn Swinton was the Yester Estate factor for 54 years until his retirement in 1910.

Whilst taking these photographs it was vital to remember not to step back to get a "better shot" as the
walkway is only about 18" wide, and with no guard rails, I would have found myself standing on fresh air.

Oh yes...   about the clock striking seven minutes to two?
Someone, who shall remain anonymous, reached out to gain a steadying handhold and, of course, with several
other objects available, managed to grab the wire connecting the hammer to the bell!
It was 1.53...   precisely!!!

And no, it wasn't me!
