Restoration of the "Cross"

Alastair shows his versatility whilst painting the cross.

At the first time of writing (11/09/06) the heraldic devices on the Cross are undergoing restoration by Alastair Fiddes Watt.

The shields had become covered in lichen over the years and were largely obscured.
The picture on the left shows one face of the Cross with the dirt removed and the original bright colours beneath.
In the right hand picture Alastair has taken the carvings back to the bare stone prior to repainting.
All four faces display the same design.

The shields receive a base coat of white paint on 23/09/06.
Alastair reports that the stonework absorbs the paint
like a sponge hence the slightly "thin"
appearance of the white.

28/09/06, and the shields receive their first coat of colour.
Even after only one coat the panels really stand out from
the background stonework.
