GIFFORD BOWLING CLUB

The present Gifford Bowling Club* is situated beyond the bridge in Station Rd. although it's roots are
to be found in Yester Estate & the Avenue where provision was made for estate workers
& villagers to play the game.

*The present building has been demolished to make way for a new clubhouse.
Click here for images of demolition & reconstruction.

In 1901 the Marquis of Tweeddale donated the land in Station Rd. to establish a four rink green and clubhouse.
The green was extended after the floods of 1948 destroyed the nearby mill lade.

The present clubhouse dates from 1970.

The club has enjoyed much national and local success and has found international repute thanks
largely to long time bowler Willie Wood who has travelled throughout the world playing the
game he loves and was Gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games in both 1982 and 1990.

Visitors are welcome.

New for 2008

Many changes are taking place this year at the club:

As many will see the new clubhouse is almost complete which we hope to be fully operational in June.

Many sports group in the village have now come together and will use the new clubhouse as their ‘home’.
This includes Bowling, Cricket, Junior Rugby and Junior Cricket.
Going forward the club will be known as GIFFORD BOWLING AND SPORTS CLUB
Representatives of all sports groups are on the committee of the club.

The committee, and indeed current members, strongly believe that the clubhouse can once again be
a focal point of the village and hope that many new members can be encouraged to join, whether as
sports members or as Social members who want to come along and have a drink and socialise.

Membership rates for 2008 are as follows:
