Born in 1767 Robert Ferguson travelled across Europe between 1795 and 1805 collecting minerals and fossils.
He was a fellow of the Royal Society in Edinburgh & the mineral Fergusonite is named after him.

He was the first County Member of Parliament for East Lothian (1835-1837).

He married Lady Elgin, originally from Dirleton, following many scandalous affairs.
Her husband, Lord Elgin, he of the Marbles, sued Ferguson for the breakdown of his marriage and won £10,000.

Ferguson died in London in 1840, and is remembered by this memorial in Haddington.
