Seen on a snowy winters day this 1930's AEC
Mammoth (SS 3224)
was No. 11 in the fleet of George Paterson of Haddington.
It used to be fairly common practice for small
scale haulage contractors to
give their vehicles fleet numbers higher than the total of lorries owned.
Thus, an operator might number the five vehicles in his fleet... 3,7,10,11,
& 14.
This was to give potential customers the impression that the fleet was
larger
than it actually was.
I don't suggest George Paterson used
this practice.
If you can supply more info on Paterson's Haulage please contact me.
